FDA-approved productsSemaglutide: evidence, status & safety
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist peptide medicine. FDA-approved products now include injection and tablet formulations with product-specific indications spanning type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular risk reduction, chronic weight management and eligible adults with MASH.
What patients should know first
| Commonly discussed for | Weight loss, glycemic control, cardiovascular risk reduction and, for eligible adults using Wegovy injection, noncirrhotic MASH with F2–F3 fibrosis. |
| What changed | FDA approved Wegovy tablets in December 2025 for adult chronic weight management and cardiovascular risk reduction, and Wegovy HD 7.2 mg injection in March 2026 for certain adults. The MASH indication was added under accelerated approval in August 2025. |
| What efficacy data show | In STEP 1, adults with overweight or obesity without diabetes receiving semaglutide 2.4 mg plus lifestyle intervention had a mean 14.9% body-weight reduction at 68 weeks versus 2.4% with placebo. That is a trial average, not a guarantee and does not describe every formulation or dose. |
| Approval boundary | FDA approval belongs to specific branded products, doses, routes and indications. A compounded semaglutide product is not FDA-approved and should not be called generic Wegovy or Ozempic. |
| Safety context | Common adverse effects are gastrointestinal. FDA removed the suicidal-behavior warning after a comprehensive 2026 review found no increased risk, while other contraindications and warnings remain. Dosing errors, fraudulent labels and unapproved salt forms continue to generate FDA concern. |
Do not confuse a molecule with a verified medication
The name of an active ingredient does not verify the product in a vial. FDA approval, when it exists, applies to a specific product and indication. A compounded version is not FDA-approved, and a research-labeled product is not approved for human use.
Clinical supervision should include diagnosis, contraindication and interaction review, realistic outcome discussion, a valid prescription, traceable sourcing and follow-up. It cannot make an anonymous or counterfeit product safe.
